TALLER MARTÍN PESCADOR
THE MICHOACÁN PRESS OF JUAN PASCOE

YOUNG TURK, anti-establishment poets Roberto Bolaño and Cristina de la Peña — in 1975, in a joint effort! — christened Juan Pascoe's fledgling hand press theTALLER MARTIN PESCADOR or “The Kingfisher Workshop.”   Today the TMP is universally recognized as the finest hand press that has operated in Mexico since the colonial period.  Its work has ranged from calling cards and invitations to birth announcements and exhibition posters, from chapbooks of avant-garde poetry to full-length books, and of course, to broadsides, with much, much of this being wonderfully illustrated byArtemio Rodriguez — creator, also, of this engaging TMP printer's device:

Testimonials to the press are many, as for example:  “Taller Martín Pescador has become the foremost source for traditional Mexican graphic arts as well as innovative Latin American literature and poetry” (Julie Melby, Curator of Graphic Arts, Princeton University, online blog), and, “Pascoe has constructed a book to be read, that does indeed glow with the presence of hand craftsmanship. . . . And what he puts in his Anglophone customer's hands is a counterpoint, at what is likely a time near the end of the private press movement, to the Kelmscott Chaucer” (Thomas Taylor's review of the TMP edition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight [Parenthesis, vol. 27]). David Huerta, the celebrated Mexican poet, opened the 2019 Feria “El mejor poema del mundo,” and there saidmany wonderful things of Juan Pascoe and the Taller Martín Pescador ~ to read the full encomium,  please click here . . .

Pascoe in a letter to Thomas Taylor has said this of himself and his press: “I am a printer who admires the Renaissance more than the Middle Ages, I am a printer who strives to make books to be read, I am a printer who came down in genealogy from Harry Duncan, who passed through the halls of Victor Hammer.  This means a certain conservatism and a certain radicalism — books to be read, books to be sculpted as if in marble, or constructed as if on canvas” (quoted in Taylor's above-cited review, our emphasis).
