COMMON GRIEF of All the Realm”
Kennedy,
[Charles] R[ann]. A poem on the death of her royal highness the Princess
Charlotte of Wales and Saxe Cobourg. London: Pr. for the author by A.J. Valpy,
1817. 8vo (19.2 cm, 7.5"). 42 pp. (lacking half-title).
$350.00
First edition, not widely held, of this verse tribute to the unfortunate
Princess Charlotte Augusta. The daughter of George IV and Caroline of Brunswick,
the princess was kept in seclusion for much of her life and resisted a potential
marriage to Prince William of Orange for fear of being forced to leave England,
but she eventually made a happy match with Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg.
About a year and a half later, she died in childbirth at the age of 21; regarding
the ensuing national outpouring of grief, the Dictionary of National Biography
quotes the jingle "Never was sorrow more sincere / Than that which flowed
round Charlotte's bier."
On Princess Charlotte Augusta, see: DNB, X, 12022. Recently
rebound in quarter tan cloth and light blue paper-covered sides, spine with
paper label. Apparently lacking the half-title. A very few spots of light
foxing, primarily to final leaves, with pages otherwise clean.
Kinnaird, Charles, 8th Baron. A letter to the Duke of Wellington on the arrest of M. Marinet. London: Pr. [by Charles Wood] for James Ridgway, 1818. 8vo (18.8 cm, 7.375" ). [1] f., 40 pp.
$145.00
Charles Kinnaird (1780–1826), a Scots peer and a Bonapartist, was falsely implicated with a M. Marinet in an 1818 attempt to assassinate Wellington, and he here defends himself and protests against the violation of Marinet’s safe-conduct. Marinet was a protegé of Kinnaird’s who claimed to be able to reveal details of an assassination plot against the Duke, it turning out that he himself was likely the would-be assassin. This is the first of two 1818 editions. NSTC 2K6435, Imprint 1. Removed from a nonce volume. A few light brown spots.
Knott, John M. The currency and the late Sir Robert Peel. [London, 1850]. 8vo (19.7 cm, 7.75"). 23, [1 (blank)] pp.
$400.00
Printed for private circulation, this pamphlet appeared in two issues, one circa 1850 and one circa 1855; given the lack of publishing information, it is difficult to discern which of the two this copy represents — but both are scarce. Knott herein provides much of the content of his exchanges with Sir Robert Peel on topics associated with the Free Trade vs. Protection debate.
Goldsmiths'-Kress 36939; NSTC 2K8200. Recent paper wrappers. Half-title faintly dust-soiled and with small inked numeral in upper corner; pages otherwise clean.

pieces, published during the administration of Lord Townshend in Ireland.
The second edition, corrected and enlarged. Dublin, 1773. 12mo (16.9 cm, 6.7").
Frontis., xx pp., [3] ff., 354 pp., [15 (lacking 2)] ff.; 1 fold. plt.
[SOLD]
Satire and biting commentary directed at the much-reviled governor of
Ireland, "the miserable instrument of English tyranny," whose personal life
and political activities prompted numerous lampoons. Sir Hercules Langrishe,
Henry Flood, Henry Grattan, and others composed these letters after the
style of Junius, and sometimes but not consistently veiled them under the
guise of accounts of Barataria mailed to an acquaintance in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania; the authors preferred anonymity to fame and left their names
off the title-pages of all three editions, including the first printing
of 1772. The collected letters appear here in expanded form, with an oversized,
folded engraved plate illustrating a meeting in the Council Chamber of Barataria.
ESTC T21365. On Langrishe, see: Dictionary of National Biography,
LVII, 125. Recently rebound in quarter calf over marbled paper sides, spine
with gilt-stamped morocco spine label, gilt-ruled raised bands, and gilt-stamped
compartment devices. All edges marbled. Title-page and ten others stamped
by a now-defunct institution. Varying degrees of foxing. Lacking final two
leaves of appendix (only).
