Goldsmith, Oliver.  The poetical works, complete, of Oliver Goldsmith, M.B., with some account of his life and literature: to which are prefixed several poetical tributes to his memory, by contemporary writers. London: Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones., 1816. 16mo (16.8 cm, 6.625"). Engr. frontis., liv, [2], 149, [1] pp.; 8 engr. plts.

This "improved edition" of Irish novelist, poet and playwright Oliver Goldsmith's (1728–1774) complete, poetical works is presented with eight illustrative wood engravings (plus several engraved tailpieces) by Richard T. Austin. Goldsmith's classic poems such as "The Deserted Village" and "The Hermit" are prefaced by not only a frontispiece of the poet engraved by Mackenzie, but also an account of the author's life. W. Woty and a "Mr. Pratt" provide poems in memory of Goldsmith and mourn the loss of the "sweet bard."
        Binding: Polished olive calf, spine gilt extra with five bands and gilt lettering. Simple, gilt single-rule border to boards. Blind semicircle and leafy tooling to turn-ins.
        Provenance: On front pastedown, engraved bookplate of a falcon atopr a coronet with a crown hovering above, and an "R" in script font below the coronet. On the verso of the front flyleaf, an inscription reading, "Patrice Harley from George, March 1886." Most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

Bound as above; minor rubbing to spine and edges, scrapes and dents to boards, a small rough spot on front board. Provenance as above; glue action to pastedowns, bookplate and frontispiece foxed, offsetting to title-page, few instances of foxing or spotting to interior, light crease and tiny closed tear to one leaf. Sturdily and simply bound collection of the Irishman's poetry.  (38387)   Please RESHELVE This.
