Jan, z Fulsztyna. Chronica,
sive Historiae Polonicae...descriptio. Basileae: Ex officina Oporiniana, 1571.
4to (19.2 cm, 7.5"). α6 a–z4 A–Z4
Aa–Cc4; ff., 368 pp., [1 (blank)] ff.
Based on Martin Kromer’s De origine et rebus gestis
Polonorum, this chronicle covers the history of Poland from the earliest
times to 1548. This is its first edition, and was followed by Latin editions
of 1573, 1609, and 1658, as well as a French translation (Paris, 1573). A
striking woodcut portrait of King Sigismund II August of Poland (in great
fur cape and hat) appears on the verso of the title-leaf.
Jan Herburt z Fulsztyna (1508–76) was a lawyer who also published a
digest of the statutes of the kingdom of Poland.
