Later printing of this attractive gift book, which opens with gilt-and-pink illuminated introductory and title pages. The work is additionally illustrated with three gilt and color plates, unsigned but attributed to Kate Greenaway; earlier editions included four Greenaway illustrations, but Schuster notes that this printing varies from the first.
Provenance: Front fly-leaf with early inked inscription of “Julia Bond Valentine” of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.
Schuster 168; not in Faxon. Publisher’s blue cloth, front cover and spine ornately gilt-stamped with cherubim and foliate designs; corners and spine extremities rubbed, with front cover gilt slightly dimmed and spine gilt moreso. Front fly-leaf with inscription as described above. Small spot of staining in outer margin of a few leaves; two leaves with corners dog-eared. All edges gilt. A charmer.
